Funds & Asset Management

One of Malta’s latest success stories has been the funds industry, with a total of 63 new licences for collective investment schemes (CISs) issued by the MFSA in the first half of 2013 alone. The funds regime in Malta focuses on four types of CISs:
  • Professional Investor Schemes (PIFs)
  • Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities (UCITS) funds
  • Retail non-UCITS funds
  • Private funds

Due to Malta’s favourable corporate tax regime, as well as a number of tax schemes encouraging employment in the financial sector in Malta, the funds sector has become an increasingly important contributor to Malta’s rise as a financial hub. Malta’s flexible but robust regulation has made it a preferred destination for hedge funds, funds of funds, private equity funds and service providers alike.

Regulation in this field has become increasingly monitored in light of the ongoing financial crisis in Europe, with a number of regulatory developments increasing the burden on funds and service providers alike, for example the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD).
